But what are stem cells?

They are biological cells found in all multicellular organisms that can divide by mitosis and differentiate into different, specialised cell types. Each new cell can remain a stem cell or become another cell type with a more specialised function, such as a skin cell, muscle cell, red blood cell or brain cell! Stem cells primarily serve as an internal repair system. These cells can essentially divide freely to replenish other cells or migrate to damaged areas to repair tissue.

Agave extract contains high levels of fructose and glucose, as well as sucrose and polyfructosans. In cosmetics, these sugars help retain moisture in the same way that they conserve water reserves for agave. Fructose is also essential for stabilising cell membranes against environmental stressors. It has the ability to prevent haemolysis, while helping to maintain the integrity of cell membranes. Fructose directly affects the activity of cell membrane ion channels, reducing or increasing the flow of particular ions into and out of cells as required. By maintaining the correct balance of ions and stabilising the membrane itself, fructose protects cells from threats that could otherwise damage them, including but not limited to damage caused by extreme sun exposure.
